PE Wax for Road Marking Paint and Asphalt
PE wax for road marking paint improves flow and lowers the application temperature of thermoplastic marking materials; in asphalt modification, it improves workability and low-temperature performance.
Road construction and marking materials are a quiet but widespread application for polyethylene wax.
Thermoplastic road marking materials
Road lines are applied with hot thermoplastic materials. These consist of a binder resin, filler, glass beads and pigment, and are applied at around 180–200 °C. Here, PE wax:
- lowers melt viscosity so that the application temperature can be reduced, which means both energy savings and less degradation of the binder,
- improves flow and leveling for a more even line,
- helps the glass beads disperse evenly.
Asphalt modification
In warm mix asphalt technologies, wax additives allow the mixing and compaction temperatures to be lowered. This reduces both emissions and fuel consumption and extends the paving season. Wax also increases resistance to rutting at high temperatures.
The role of carbon black
In black asphalt sealants, joint filling mastics and waterproofing membranes, carbon black both gives color and protects against UV degradation. In roofing membranes, this protection directly extends the service life of the product.
What to Watch For in This Industry
A lower application temperature protects the binder
Holding thermoplastic material at high temperature for long periods leads to yellowing and loss of adhesion. Adding wax reduces this risk.
Wax type affects low-temperature cracking
Highly crystalline waxes can cause brittleness in the cold. Softer types should be considered for harsh climate zones.

Industry-Specific Questions
What wax level should road marking material contain?
It varies with the formulation, but the typical level is 1–4%. The aim is to bring the application viscosity down to the target value; the level is set by trials.
How much temperature reduction does warm mix asphalt achieve?
Reductions of typically 20–30 °C are reported with wax-based additives. The exact value depends on the binder type and the mix design.
