Carbon Black for Batteries and Energy Storage
In lead-acid and lithium-ion cells, carbon black for batteries is used as a conductive additive: it builds the electron path between the active material and the current collector.
Energy storage is one of the fastest-growing uses of carbon black. Here, carbon black works not as a pigment but as a conductive additive.
Why it is needed
The active material in a battery electrode usually has poor electronic conductivity. Carbon black builds a continuous conductive network between the active material particles and between them and the current collector. Without this network, the internal resistance of the cell rises, power density falls and charge-discharge efficiency decreases.
In lead-acid batteries
In the negative plate paste, carbon additives delay sulfation and extend cycle life, especially in applications that operate at partial state of charge (start-stop systems, renewable energy storage).
In lithium-ion cells
Both cathode and anode formulations contain a conductive additive. High-structure, high-surface-area carbon blacks are preferred because they build an effective network even at low levels, since every percent given to the conductive additive is taken away from the active material and therefore from energy density.
Purity is critical
In battery applications, metal impurities and sulfur content directly affect cell life and safety. These applications require high-purity conductive carbon blacks instead of standard rubber grades.
What to Watch For in This Industry
Conductive additive takes away energy density
The aim is to reach the required conductivity at the lowest possible level. That is why high-structure grades are valuable.
Purity requirements differ from rubber grades
Battery applications need special conductive carbon black types; standard ASTM N-series grades do not meet this level of purity.

Industry-Specific Questions
Do you have a product for battery applications?
Battery applications require special high-purity conductive carbon black types. Our current range is aimed mainly at rubber and plastics applications. If you tell us what you need in this area, we can look into supply options.
Can standard grades be used in lead-acid batteries?
Standard grades are used in some battery applications, but sulfur and metal impurity limits must be assessed carefully. We can review the certificate of analysis and decide together.
