N330 vs N550 Carbon Black: How to Choose

N330 vs N550: we compare the two most common grades on their technical values, covering which one fits which application, why, and at what cost. A practical guide to make the decision easier.

Fine and coarse carbon black compared in two bowls side by side

N330 and N550 are the two carbon black grades most asked about in the Turkish market. Both are called "general purpose", but they are not interchangeable. This guide was written to help you decide which one fits your application.

The one-sentence answer

If the product will wear, choose N330; if it will not wear but must keep its shape and process easily, choose N550.

What these differences mean in practice

Reinforcement

Nearly twice the surface area of N550 means N330 has far more contact points with the rubber. The result: higher tensile strength, higher abrasion resistance and higher modulus. In a tire tread, this difference shows up directly in mileage.

Processability

N550 processes markedly more easily. Compound viscosity is low, mixing energy and time are lower, and it swells less on extrusion. Thanks to its high structure (OAN 121), it gives profiles with a smooth surface. That is why it is the classic choice for brake diaphragms, seals and extruded profiles.

Heat build-up

High surface area means high hysteresis loss, and this loss turns into heat. In a part that deforms continuously (sidewall, vibration mount, hose), N330 can overheat. N550 gives a longer life in these applications.

Filler capacity and cost

N550 allows higher filler and oil loadings in the compound, which lowers formulation cost. For coloring and UV protection, N550 is more than sufficient, and using N330 would be an unnecessary cost.

Recommendations by application

  • Tire tread, conveyor belt cover: N330 (or N339 / N234 for higher performance)
  • Tire carcass, sidewall: N550 or N660
  • Extruded profile, hose, seal: N550
  • Brake diaphragm: N550
  • Black masterbatch, plastic pipe: N550
  • General-purpose mechanical rubber part: N330 if there is wear, otherwise N550

An intermediate option: SHP50

If you expect both coloring and reinforcement, consider SHP50: it offers higher jetness and improved mechanical properties compared with N550, and its extrusion behavior is good.

How do I decide?

A comparison on paper is a starting point; the final decision is made by testing on your own line. Our 1-pallet trial program exists for exactly this: you can test the two grades side by side.
